Why do cats like to chew and eat oat grass? Mother Nature likes to vary a feline's diet for the sake of good health and good digestion. Oat Grass provides chlorophyll and roughage -- all good things to keep a cat's system in proper working order. Plus, the tender shoots taste good, too! After all, whenever we grow them here, they don't last long! The chewing, biting, and trampling of several office cats take their toll on the young sprouts! If you've never grown oat grass before,Scroll down to read Suggestions for Growing Oat Greens.
Simple-to-grow greens for your cat. You get one 8-ounce size plastic tub with lid. The tub comes filled with quality potting soil. Included is a package of oat seeds (about one ounce). Add roughage and chlorophyll to your cat's diet! The chlorophyll in greens helps to freshen breath, too!
Suggestions for Growing Oat Greens
Grow oat greens for your cat to nibble! It's healthy and a much better alternative to eating your houseplants!
1. If you want to use your own planter, you just need the Oat Seeds (sold above) and ordinary potting soil. If you buy the Garden Kit (above), you'll get the seeds, planters, soil, and decorative wood holder -- all you'll have to add is water!
2. Whatever planter you use, add loose (not packed) soil to at least a 1-inch depth. Sprinkle a single layer of seeds across the top of the soil. Sprinkle (don't pack on) more soil so the seeds are just covered. Now add water. Add plenty to saturate the soil.
3. Set the planter -- out of the cat's reach for now -- in a place that's room temperature and gets a good amount of light.
4. Keep the soil moist. This is important!
5. In three to five day, you should see sprouts. When the sprouts are about 3 inches or taller, offer the planter to your cats.
The cats will chew off the grass and even pull up some by the roots if they're extra eager to get their greens! With time, the oat grass will die off and won't grow back. You'll need to re-plant for a new crop. A good suggestion is to keep two planters going at once -- have one planter growing (out of the cat's reach) and one planter of ready grass set out for the cats to enjoy.
